UFC 107 Afterthoughts..

DeMarques Johnson pulled that triangle out quick, he was getting hammered on too, that was nice to see. Edgar Garcia seems legit though.

I had Stefan Struve winning Round 1, and Paul Buentello winning Rounds 2 & 3…the judges obviously saw differently. Maybe I was biased, as I was hoping Paul would win it.

Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez need to fight @ 155lbs now. Diego gave Kenny a beatdown when they were both at 185lbs, I’m interested in see what happens at 155.

I honestly think Frank Mir has as good a chance as anyone at beating Fedor now. Yeah I know that’s probably an unpopular opinion, but I think he has the style to give Fedor a competitive fight.

BJ Penn just totally outclassed Diego Sanchez. That was brutal, and I’m a bigger Diego fan now. Who’s left for BJ Penn to fight at lightweight? Sure, there are many good fighters, but I think BJ is far ahead of the pack right now. I wouldn’t mind seeing a 3rd fight between BJ Penn and Matt Hughes.

UFC 107: My Picks To Win

Yeah, I know my picks don’t matter, but still…

Kevin Burns over TJ Grant
Demarques Johnson over Edgar Garcia
Rousimar Palhares over Lucio Linhares
Johnny Hendricks by something brutal over Ricardo “Golden Boy” Funch
Matt Wiman over Shane Nelson
Alan Belcher over Wilson Gouveia
Paul Buentello by KO over Stefan Struve
Kenny Florian by submission over Clay Guida
Jon Fitch by decision over Mike Pierce
Frank Mir by submission over Cheick Kongo
…and the main event is a tough one for me, I hate to see either guy lose, but I think I’m gonna have to pick BJ Penn on this one, although Diego is an animal and always comes to fight.

Random UFC 101 Comments..

TITO. He’ll be fighting Mark Coleman sometime in the near future.

Kendall Grove almost broke Ricardo Almeidas arm.. who woulda thought. Ricardo Almeida still won a decision.

Referee Dan Miragliotta still sucks.

LOL @ Forrest Griffin running out of the cage… and why does it seem like Anderson Silva’s punches hurt everyone so much worse than other people? I remember a straight right hand that sent James Irvin to the mat holding his face and curled in the fetal position. This one on Forrest was a backpeddling right jab that sent him down…WTF?

I felt embarrassed for Forrest.

BJ Penn vs Kenny Florian was a good fight, as I expected. Penn choked Florian into a tapout with a rear-naked choke. Penn is still dominant at 155lbs, because I believe Florian was the legit #1 contender.

Dana White wants to have a UFC event at Fenway Park in Boston sometime in the future.

Time Warp on Discovery Channel, Features MMA

Discovery Channel’s show Time Warp just did a couple of really cool segments on MMA. The premise of the show is to slow things down using a high speed camera, so we can see the slow motion effects. In tonights episode, they had Kenny Florian, Erin Toughill, Dave and Dan Camarillo. I don’t know when they’ll show a re-run, so check your TV listings, but it was really cool to see everything done in super slow motion.

UFC 91 Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Couture RESULTS As They Happen

Maybe not exactly play-by-play, because I may be drinking and smoking, but I’ll at least try to post the winners and losers, along with random commentary about UFC 91… check this post for updates throughout the night.

::rooting for randy couture::

1st main card fight of the night
NATE QUARRY vs. DAMIEN MAIA – uhhh, this doesnt look good for Quarry so far. At all. Maia has his back with a body triangle locked on, looking for a RNC. Looks like he is under Nates’ chin right now, but not for very long, still got 3 minutes left in the round. it’s over now, 100% zhoozhitsu, Damien Maia by RNC, round 1. Also, Nate and Damien kissed on the mouth.

ring girl Arianny Celeste is looking hawt, as usual.

Randy backstage on the couch with his wife before the fight = fail?

2nd main card fight of the night
GABRIEL GONZAGA vs. JOSH HENDRICKS – Josh Hendricks is the dude who Randy Couture brought in to simulate Brock Lesnar for training. He enters the cage and looks around like he must be a badass, and his agent Ken Pavia says he’s going to KO Gonzaga in the first round. Also, Hendricks has some strange lumps all over him. PROPS to Gonzaga for teh awesome into music: Glenn Danzig “Mother“. Do you wanna butt heads with me?

LOL @ Hendricks KO’ing Gonzaga in round one. THE OPPOSITE happened. Gabriel Gonzaga knee’d him in the gut a couple times real hard, then put a fist against his chin real good FTW. Gabriel Gonzaga wins by TKO.

3rd fight of the night shown
MATT BROWN vs. RYAN THOMAS – They’re showing us this prelim fight because the first two ended quickly. It was a damn good fight really, Matt Brown ended up winning by armbar in round two.

4th Pay-per-view fight of the night
DUSTIN “McLovin” HAZELETT vs. TAMDEN “Barncat” McCRORY – People say this is the battle of the geeks. I think Rogan said the same thing back when McCrory fought Luke Cummo. Regardless, Dustin Hazelett is sporting an epic beard for this fight. Dude, I got to pick Hazelett for this fight, he’s walking out to CCR’s Bad Moon Risin’. Credence FTW. So far, these “nerds” are trying to knock eachother the hell out. Wow, that was a helluva fight, Hazelett has crazy jiujitsu and he used it well when the fight hit the ground. Joe Rogan is pimping the Rubber Guard, and rightfully so. Dustin Hazelett wins by armbar submission in round 1. Read the rest of this entry »

Kenny Florian Says Roger Huerta Was Slippery

According to TheMMANews.com, Kenny Florian is “suspicious” of Roger Huerta being slippery. Here is the quote from Kenny Florian:

To be honest he was really slippery and I don’t mean that like technically-wise, he was really slippery. I don’t know, I don’t want to speculate and say that something was used or whatever but he was just hard to hang on to and that was from all the positions. Even when I had him in like a headlock or a guillotine everything was just really slippery. When I get the position, when I get mount, when I get back-mount, I’ve fought and I’ve wrestled some of the best guys on the ground from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and submission wrestling to MMA and when I get those positions you’re not getting out and Roger was able to get out. It was pretty slippery so I was a little surprised. Just the first time I was mounted on him and he gave his back I was a little suspicious, I knew something was up. Who knows, all I know is I’m good at keeping those positions and I know the difference between sweat and something else and it felt like something else but who knows. (Jokingly) Maybe it’s Albolene left over from the day before from the weight cut!

UFC 87 RESULTS

  • Georges St. Pierre defeats Jon Fitch via unanimous decision
  • Brock Lesnar defeats Heath Herring via Unanimous Decision
  • Robert “Rich Boy Wannabe Thug” Emerson defeats Manvel Gamburyan via strikes in round 1
  • Kenny Florian defeats Roger Huerta by unanimous decision (domination)
  • Cheick Kongo defeats Dan Evenson via TKO round 1
  • Demian Maia defeats Jason McDonald by submission in round 3
  • Tamdan McCrory defeats Luke Cummo via unanimous decision
  • Jon Jones defeats Andre Gusmao via unanimous decision
  • Chris Wilson defeats Steve Bruno via unanimous decision
  • Ben Saunders defeats Ryan Thomas via Armbar in round 2

Now, my thoughts. Referee Steve Miragliotta still sucks beyond belief. Did he really poke Heath Herring in the eye during the staredown? Give me a break, Miragliotta, how does it feel to be known as the shittiest ref in the sport? In all fairness, I didn’t see the actual eyepoke, I just saw Herring turn away from him, I said “what happened” and then I heard Rogan and Goldberg talking about Dan Miragliotta poking Heath Herring in the eye. WTF.

Also, I noticed Goldberg is keeping more stats on the fighters now. For instance, tonight I learned nobody has ever passed Jon Fitch’s guard in the UFC (prior to tonights fight). Also, GSP has a 80% takedown rate. I think Goldberg even mentioned a takedown defense percentage. Kinda interesting stuff I guess.

Kenny Florian put on a technical clinic for Roger Huerta, and in my opinion, totally dominated the fight.

Brock Lesnar is a giant LNP machine. Ok, maybe thats unfair of me to say, after all, he did try to crush Heath Herring’s ribcage with knees, and he punches like a mule kicks, but was still unable to finish Herring. Props to Herring for being a tough SOB.

I was really hoping to see Manvel Gamburyan break off one of Rob Emerson’s limbs, but oh well, Emerson KO’d him in like 12 seconds. In case you’re not aware, Robert Emerson is the spoiled little rich kid who gangs up on innocent people at gas stations, with 12 of his friends.

World Championship Fighting 3 provides another knockout show

Written by Sal CarrilloWorld Championship Fighting
Boston, MA – Fans once again packed the Shriners Auditorium Friday night for the third installment of World Championship Fighting. The night was filled with action packed fights from start to finish and a special autograph session with UFC Fighters: Marcus “the Irish Hand Grenade” Davis, Kenny “KenFlo” Florian, Jorge “El Conquistador” Rivera, Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon, and Internet Legend Sean “The Gladiator” Gannon the only man to beat Kimbo Slice. The night’s action included UFC veteran Dan “The Upgrade” Lauzon and Brendan Hoxie engaging in a battle that continuously saw Lauzon get the better of the exchanges. Not one for backing down, Hoxie displayed incredible resiliency and was able to endure the punishment being dished out by Lauzon. Lauzon was able to finish the fight late in the second round by TKO improving his record to 10-2 and extending his win streak to six straight.

In the night’s other featured bout, local favorites Mike Campbell and Rich Moskowitz faced each other in one of the longest and most electric stare-downs with both fighters motioning to the crowd and jawing at each other. At one point Rich Moskowitz removed his mouthpiece to exchange some words with Campbell before the bout started. The fight began with both fighters coming out looking to impose their will, with Campbell getting the better of the Moskowitz on his feet. Campbell then landed a crushing right hand that floored Moskowitz and allowed Campbell the opportunity to close in and land punches from the top until the referee jumped in to stop the fight.

World Championship Fighting promoter Joe Cavallaro said about the event, “We are so excited to see the overwhelming support from our fans. We couldn’t be any happier with the crowds we see here every single show and with the amazing fights we’re treated to each time out. It’s really a thrill for us to bring this action to the fans here in Massachusetts.” The event drew between 3,000 and 3,400 fans and once again had the fans talking about the fights all the way out to the parking lots. As a testiment to the excitement being generated by World Championship Fighting, the event was covered by a trio of major media outlets including ESPN, NBCSports.com, and HDNet. This marks the first time a local New England MMA promotion has been covered by such a prestigious group of media. In addition to media coverage, WBCN The Rock of Boston was on hand with the WBCN street team to support World Championship Fighting. WCF and WBCN announced a partnership between the two companies earlier this month. World Championship Fighting would like to thank all of fighters, fans, media and its great sponsors for making the event such an overwhelming success. Mark your calendars now for our upcoming event on September 19th!

We’ll see you at the fights!

UFC® ANNOUNCES WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHT

ST-PIERRE vs. FITCH @ UFC 87: SEEK AND DESTROY
AUGUST 9
LIVE FROM TARGET CENTER

Tickets On Sale Now!

Las Vegas, NV (USA) — The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s initial trip to Minnesota on August 9th just got bigger with today’s signing of the UFC® Welterweight Title bout between Champion Georges St. Pierre and number one contender Jon Fitch, which will headline the UFC 87: SEEK AND DESTROY card at Target Center.

It will be St-Pierre’s first bout since he regained his crown from Matt Serra at UFC 83 on April 19th. In Fitch, he will be facing a former Division I wrestler who has won eight consecutive UFC bouts without a loss, the longest streak in modern-day UFC history.

“He’s a very, very tough guy,” said St-Pierre of Fitch. “I’m gonna have to train hard and be very well prepared because he may be my toughest fight yet.”

“The whole goal is to get the belt and be in the position where guys can’t duck me, run away, or say they don’t want to fight me,” said Fitch. “If I have the belt, there’s no excuse, and if you say you’re the best, then we’re gonna fight. This is gonna be a tough fight, but I’m gonna make sure I’m sharp that night, and wherever the fight needs to go, that’s fine with me.”

In other action on the UFC 87 card, heavyweight sensation Brock Lesnar returns home for a pivotal bout in his rise up the UFC ranks. Lesnar was originally scheduled to face UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman on August 9th, but a knee injury has forced “The Hammer” to withdraw from the show. Lesnar’s opponent will be announced shortly.

Tickets for UFC 87: SEEK AND DESTROY are on sale now priced at $600, $400, $250, $125, $75 and $50 and are available at Target Center’s Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, online at ticketmaster.com or by
calling 651.989.5151.

UFC 87: SEEK AND DESTROY is available live on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. EST/7 p.m. PST on iN DEMAND, DIRECTV, DISH Network, TVN, Bell ExpressVu, Shaw Communications and Viewer’s Choice Canada for a suggested retail price of $44.95 for standard definition or high-definition broadcasts (where available).

Lightweight contenders Kenny Florian and Roger Huerta will also throw down in a highly anticipated bout that may determine a future challenger for the 155-pound crown.

“Roger Huerta versus Kenny Florian has the potential to be one of the most action packed fights of the year, both have won Fight of the Night awards and they are known for delivering nonstop action,” said Dana White, UFC President. “Kenny has established himself as one of the best in the world at 155 and he wants another shot at the title. Roger sports a 20-1 record and is undefeated in 6 UFC fights. That is an amazing accomplishment in one of MMA’s most competitive divisions.”

The remaining bouts for UFC 87 will be announced in the near future. All bouts are live and subject to change. For further information on the UFC visit ufc.com or uk.ufc.com or ufcespanol.com.

Quick Thoughts On UFC 84: Ill Will

Great show, and going into the night, I was conflicted about who I wanted to win for some fights. I’m a Lyoto Machida fan, and while I’ve never really been a Tito Ortiz fan, part of me was hoping to see him win just for the controversy it could’ve caused with Dana White. However, I also didn’t really want to see Machida lose, but anyway. That fight went about how I expected it would. I got excited when it looked like Tito was going to get that triangle choke in the 3rd round, but Machida escaped perfectly. I’ve also heard people comparing Lyoto Machida’s performance to Kalib Starnes. WTF? In no way was that a Starnes. Machida is ninja, whether he’s exciting or not. (No, it wasn’t an exciting fight overall). Maybe Tito can go to EliteXC now and fight Frank Shamrock, that would be nice.

Wanderlei Silva destroyed Keith Jardine. Damn. The Axe Murderer is back. Who’s next? Will we see a Silva/Liddell rematch? Will Silva ever fight Rampage again? or will Wanderlei drop to 185lbs as a lot of people suspect he will do? That is the match-up that should happen. Wanderlei vs. Anderson Silva. I’d pay double to see that fight.

BJ Penn was able to get the daily requirement of blood in his diet from Sean Sherk. BJ kicked Sherk’s ass throughout the whole fight, and afterwards ran over to wipe blood from Sherks face, then licked his hand. The winner of Kenny Florian vs. Roger Huerta needs to fight Sean Sherk next.

Fighting out of Minneapolis, Brock Lesnar, 6’3 ½”, 265 lbs., made his mixed martial arts debut in 2007 and annihilated Min Soo Kim in just 69 seconds. He made an impressive UFC debut earlier this year at UFC 81, just falling short of victory against former UFC champion Frank Mir. The NCAA wrestling champion and former professional wrestler now returns to the Octagon to take on one of the fight game’s true legends, Mark “The Hammer” Coleman, in an attempt to score his first win in the UFC.

“This fight can’t come soon enough; I’m ready to go and I’m excited! I’m still looking to make a name in the UFC and I get a chance to do that in my hometown, which is great for the fans,” said Lesnar. “It’s an honor to get a chance to fight Coleman, he’s a legend and he’s made history fighting all over the world. I know he is going to come into this fight in great condition, looking to re-establish himself as a top contender in the UFC. It’s going to be a challenge, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Columbus, Ohio’s Mark Coleman, 6’1″/255 lbs, is a former Olympic wrestler, NCAA wrestling champion and a pioneer in the sport of mixed martial arts. He won the UFC 10 and UFC 11 tournaments and became the first-ever UFC heavyweight champion in 1997. In the PRIDE® organization, Coleman scored impressive wins over some of the biggest names in the sport, including Kazuyuki Fujita, Don Frye, Igor Vovchanchyn, and “Shogun” Rua. Inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in March of this year, Coleman now returns to the Octagon where he first made his name in MMA, and he plans on showing Brock Lesnar a few tricks while giving him a rude introduction to the ground and pound style he trademarked.

“My goal since I left the UFC was to eventually get back into the cage; I’m much more comfortable in the cage, and when I finally got the offer from Dana it didn’t take any time to give him my answer – especially when he told me who my opponent would be,” said Coleman. “A lot of people are interested in this matchup, I’ll be up against a bigger, stronger wrestler for the first time, and they know this fight will be extremely intense from the start. But I didn’t take this fight to lose, I expect to win and win by knockout.”

Also on UFC 87 main card is a lightweight showdown between Boston’s Kenny Florian and Minneapolis’ Roger “El Matador” Huerta.

Kenny Florian (10-3) made his UFC debut on Season 1 of The Ultimate Fighter®, advancing to the finals before losing to Diego Sanchez. Since then, Florian has dropped just one fight in the UFC, a classic five-round battle against Sean Sherk for the vacant UFC lightweight title in October 2006. Vying for a second title shot, Florian has proved himself worthy by racking up victories over the best fighters in the division, including Dokonjonosuke Mishima, Alvin Robinson, Din Thomas and most recently Joe Lauzon. Florian’s plan is to move Huerta out of his way at UFC 87 and put himself right in line for another shot at the crown.

“I’m really excited to be fighting Roger Huerta;
this is the fight I wanted because he’s the other big lightweight in the UFC, and he is definitely at the top of the division,” said Florian. “I’ve never fought a guy in his hometown, so this is going to be different for me, but no matter where we fight it’s going to be a back and forth non-stop war. We are both aggressive and Huerta is always in great shape; he’s one of those guys who just hangs in there, so when you have the chance, you have to finish him, and that’s what I’m gonna do.”

Hailing from Minneapolis, MN, Huerta (21-1-1) made his UFC debut in September 2006 at UFC 63, where he scored a unanimous decision victory against Jason Dent. The 25 year-old has since tallied five straight wins in the Octagonâ„¢ against lightweight contenders John Halverson, Leonard Garcia, Doug Evans, Alberto Crane and Clay Guida, running his perfect record in the UFC to 6-0. The first fighter ever to fight five times in one year, Huerta is on a vision quest to become the UFC lightweight champion, and he will let no one, including Florian, stand in his way.

“This is going to be a really great fight, it will distinguish who will be the number one contender,” said Huerta. “I’m looking forward to fighting Florian, he is a technical fighter and comes in with a great game plan, but I have a game plan too, so I think this is going to be a chess match, one where we both use all our MMA skills to stay in there. I’m really excited to fight in Minneapolis, the support I get here is amazing, this city has adopted me, this is where I train for all of my fights, and I can’t wait to bring it a win in August.”

The remaining bouts for UFC 87 will be announced in the near future. All bouts are live and subject to change. For further information on the UFC visit ufc.com or uk.ufc.com or ufcespanol.com.

UFC Fight Night

UFC Fight Night, which I had to record and watch after the event aired.

Houston Alexander was victim of a quick knockout at the hands of James Irvin. In the post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, Houston says he was conscious the whole time, and said he gets hit harder by his children. Poor Houston Alexander, he needs to stick to teaching kids about “Hip-Hop culture” and trying to convince people it’s a “charitable” deed.

Nate Diaz kept his composure even as he was getting drilled upside his orbital bone by Kurt Pellegrino, and managed to survive round one. In round two, he scored a triangle choke and forced Pellegrino to tap. Joe Rogan was exactly right when he said it was the “most entertaining” triangle of the year (or something like that). Diaz gave a double-bird and flexed while Pellegrino was tapping.

I figured Matt Hamill vs. Tim Boetsch would be a messy fight, knowing Hamill likes the ground-n-pound and is very good at it. They both ended up getting their faces thrashed a bit. Matt Hamill’s bottom lip is sliced into two pieces. Hamill won the fight by TKO after pressing Boetsch against the cage and hammering his head around, finally holding his neck down and punching his face. I’m just wondering how the general public will react to Joe Rogan using the term “Rape choke.”

Karo Parisyan complained about an early stoppage, he was more vocal about it that Houston Alexander was, but in Karo’s defense, I couldn’t actually tell if he was knocked out or not, whereas there is no doubt Houston Alexander was unconscious and not defending himself for a couple of seconds, even though he says otherwise.

Tommy Speer is indeed a robot. The dude has a hard noggin on him, but I guess even robots can be destroyed after being hammered repeatedly. Anthony Johnson just owned him with kicks and punches. Tommy Speer stayed standing for like 20 or 30 seconds, taking more punishment and trying to fight back, but the striked had him moving slower and slower. Anthony Johnson finally nailed him and left him asleep leaning against the cage.

Kinda surprised to hear Joe Rogan mention Shinya Aoki and JZ Cavalcante during the Frankie Edgar/Gray Maynard fight.

Kenny Florian vs. Joe Lauzon was a great fight. For the most part, Florian dominated. The fight ended with Florian having mount, and pounding away on Lauzon. Joe Lauzon did a good job defending his face, but was unable to escape.
