Strikeforce HW Grand Prix: BARNETT vs ROGERS / WERDUM vs OVEREEM

Like I said in my previous post, it’s been awhile since I did any blogging…but tonight I’m watching the Strikeforce HW Grand Prix by myself — well, I just got home, so I’m starting a bit late, and I’ve missed all but the Barnett/Rogers and Werdum/Overeem fights.

Josh Barnett just pretty much dominated Brett Rogers the entire time, before tapping him out in the 2nd round by arm-triangle choke.

Wow, the Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum fight was strange. The judges haven’t announced the winner yet, but I am guessing, WERDUM takes the fight. I think he actually got the better of the striking, and obviously Overeem didn’t want any on the ground. I think overall, Werdum was more offensive.

Holy cow, a unanimous decision for Overeem. Was I ever wrong.

Fedor Tapped. Fabricio Werdum Makes History.

Fabricio Werdum has shocked the MMA world by forcing the previously unbeatable Fedor Emelianenko to tap out due to a triangle/armbar submission at tonights Strikeforce event.

Fedor dazed Werdum at the beginning, and knocked him down but proceeded to follow Werdum into his guard, which was Fedor’s downfall. After the fight Fabricio Werdum acknowledged that although he won tonight, Fedor is still the best fighter in the world.

So what is the future for Fedor? There was retirement rumors a few weeks ago, but will he now feel like he needs to fight again and go out on a win?

Other results from the event:
Cung Le defeats Scott Smith by TKO/RSC 2nd 1:46
Cris Santos defeats Jan Finney by TKO/RSC 2nd 2:56

Fedor KO’s Brett Rogers @ StrikeForce on CBS

As expected, Fedor Emelianenko won again. Brett Rogers did his best to give Fedor some trouble, I think he broke Fedor’s nose with his first jab of the fight, causing some blood in the first round. In the second round, Fedor landed an overhand right that connected on Brett Rogers’ chin, sending him to the mat where Fedor pounced on him and threw a few more punches before referee John McCarthy stopped the fight at 1:48 into the second round. I think Brett Rogers’ thinks the fight was stopped early. Maybe he’s right, maybe the ref should have let Fedor punch him a few more times, but I think Rogers was done for at that point anyway.

I’m sad that CBS didn’t air Roxanne Modafferi vs. Marloes Coenen, and I’m disappointed to find out that Roxanne lost!

In other fights, Jake Shields laid on top of Jason “Mayhem” Miller for 5 rounds to win the StrikeForce middleweight belt. Mayhem had Shields in a dangerous rear naked choke at the end of round three, but Shields was saved by the bell.

Gegard Mousasi defeated Sokoudjou by TKO @ 3:43 into the second round.

and…

Fabricio Werdum won a decision victory over Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.

Strikeforce / M-1 Global – Fedor vs. Rogers on CBS

I gotta pick Fedor to win this. One of the fights I’m most looking forward to seeing is Roxanne Modafferi vs Marloes Coenen, and I would like to see Roxanne win this one. I think the winner gets a shot at Cristiane Cyborg.

Gegard Mousasi will defeat Sokoudjou one way or another, although Sokoudjou certainly has a punchers chance.

Mayhem Miller vs. Jake Shields is an interesting matchup, I don’t really have a favorite to win. I know Miller is an underdog according to the odds, but he is always able to be competitive, and usually wins.

Antonio Silva vs. Fabricio Werdum, I’m picking Bigfoot to win.

Strikeforce: Gina Carano vs. Cyborg RESULTS

Well damn, I’m sad tonight. I just watched Gina Carano get beat down by Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos for the Strikeforce women’s 145lb championship. Gina was in there to fight, and she showed she has great heart, but I don’t predict anyone beating Cyborg for awhile. Cyborg looked better striking, although Carano did land several good striked of her own. Cyborg went for takedowns a couple of times but ended up in Gina’s mount, once Gina let her up, and I’m not sure why she did that. All in all, it was a pretty dominant performance by Cyborg, and the fight ended with Gina on the mat and Cyborg raining down punches when the referee stepped in to stop the fight with just 1 second left in round one (see below). Cristiane Cyborg Santos wins by TKO @ 4:59 of round one.

Fedor Emelianenko Signs Contract With StrikeForce

Bah… Dana White is pissed. In fact, according to Sherdog, Dana White’s exact words were “Fedor is a f***ing joke. He turns down a huge deal and the opportunity to face the best in the world to fight nobodies for no money!”

I guess StrikeForce agreed to the M-1 Global co-promotion deal.

Seriously, his possible opponents now are Alistair Overeem, Fabricio Werdum, Brett Rogers, who am I missing? Gilbert Yvel, Roger Gracie?
