RIP Shelby “Girl” Walker

Damn, I just found out Shelby Walker, a MMA fighter and boxer, died from an apparent overdose on painkillers. I first saw Shelby compete in MMA awhile back on my “Hook & Shoot: Revolution” DVD, she fought Judy Neff and lost but I’ve remembered her ever since because I thought she was pretty hot and looked good with her braces on.. :) Sucks to find out she has died. RIP Shelby Walker. 02/27/75 – 09/24/06

Is Mike Swick ready for Rich Franklin? also Franklin -vs- Anderson Silva

uhhh.. he says he is.. ok, yeah he just beat David Loiseau in a 3-round decision, and homeboy bypassed the humble route and during his post-fight interview went right to saying he thinks he deserves a title shot against Rich Franklin right now.. I’m not too sure about that. Yeah, Mike Swick was impressive tonight, and he has been impressive in all the fights of his that I’ve seen, but I want to see a couple more before I think he’s ready for Franklin.

But first, Rich Franklin has other fights to worry about, such as his upcoming October bout with Anderson Silva. This could be a troublesome matchup for Rich Franklin. I hope he’s working hard on his ground game, because I have a feeling Anderson Silva will be able to give him a war if it’s a stand-up fight. Of course, Franklin is definitley no Chris Leben. But we also know that Franklin is due to fight the middleweight winner of this seasons “The Ultimate Fighter” reality show unless he loses to Anderson Silva.

Back to Mike Swick though, I like the dude, and I want to see him go far in MMA. I’m afraid if he faces Rich Franklin too soon he’ll end up getting Quarryed. For the definition of “Quarryed”, watch the 2005 fight with Rich Franklin -vs- Nate Quarry.. Nate hasn’t fought since.

In other news, Pat Miletich defeated in his comeback. Renzo Gracie by guillotine choke.

This took place tonight in the IFL (International Fight League), which was formed earlier this year.

I think this was Pat’s first fight since 2002, I was hoping he would get a win, oh well.. maybe he’ll try again..

Matt Hughes retains his title – defeats B.J. Penn in the 3rd round

Holy shit that was a good fight.. Matt Hughes seems to get his ass kicked the first 2 rounds, coming close to being choked unconscious at the end of round 2, but after the bell rang for round 3 to begin, B.J. Penn looks mroe gassed. Matt Hughes ended up in side-mount on B.J. Penn and had B.J.’s arms pinned, then started to rain down elbows and punches to Penn’s face before referee John McCarthy stopped the fight.

It appears that Matt Hughes will fight Georges St. Pierre next, but I believe we still need to see a Hughes/Penn III eventually.

UFC 63: Matt Hughes vs. B.J. Penn 9/23/2006 on Pay-Per-View

Nice.. this is a long awaited rematch. Although I don’t think Matt Hughes is the same fighter he was when he lost to B.J. Penn in 2004. This is a hard fight for me to predict, but I’m guessing Matt Hughes will retain his title via TKO stoppage.

Another fight that could be spectacular is David Loiseau vs. Mike Swick. Oh hell, these guys are both badasses, and it could go either way. This could end up being the most entertaining fight of the night.

Other than those two fights, there’s not much else I give a shit about on this UFC event.

PRIDE: Final Conflict Absolute – Open Weight Grand Prix 2006

Wow, what a great event. In my opinion probably the best show all year. Every fight was entertaining, and we got to see another spectacular high-kick KO by Mirko “CroCop” Filopovic, against Wanderlei Silva of all people. CroCop went on the fight Josh Barnett in the final match, and won by tapout at 5:32 of round 1. Barnett had dished out several good striked, but was ultimately pummelled into submission by CroCop.

This should set up an exciting rematch between CroCop and Fedor Emelianenko sometime soon.

Bruce Lee THEME PARK to be built in China.

Heh.. a “screaming roller coaster” is planned to be the highlight of the park, with Bruce Lee’s trademark screams and grunts as a sound effect.

Likewise, they will also have radio controlled Bruce Lee manequin robots that will roam the theme park and randomly kick visitors asses with nunchuks.. ok maybe not, but that would be cool. In all seriousness though, they do indeed plan to have Bruce Lee robots “patrolling” the park, but they will refrain from kicking anyones ass.

The project is under scrutiny by Bruce Lees daughter, Shannon Lee. An entreprenuer herself, she has many plans for her fathers name, and she intends to visit the theme park to see “what else they’re dreaming up over there” although she admits she may not be able to do much about what goes on in China.

Bruce Lee is widely considered to be the father of modern martial arts. He died at age 32, in 1973 of a cerebral edema, one month before “Enter The Dragon” opened in movie theatres. Bruce Lee is buried in Seattle, Washington USA.

Here is a UPI link to the story.

Jason “Mayhem” Miller -vs- Robbie Lawler finally going to happen.. this weekend..

should be very awesome.. WAR Mayhem!.. for some reason, Robbie has always annoyed me, but he is nonetheless an entertaining and talented fighter. This fight has been awhile in the making, with Mayhem going to jail, etc.. and Lawler will be a mcuh tougher fight for Mayhem than the big 6’7″ 300lb bastard he fought recently.. (and won in like under a minute i think)..
